Ariel's Thoughts on a Doe-eyed Explorer

To be frank, I originally purchased Little Owl’s Night for me. I simply fell in love with the doe-eyed bird aptly named Little Owl. For about a year on roughly month long intervals I would reread the book, hoping that Bean might now share my enthusiasm. Nope. Nada. Not yet. Until a month ago when voila, Bean loved Little Owl as much as I did! I promptly bought Little Owl’s Day to celebrate.

Little Owl’s Night is the poetic ramblings of a baby owl, as he observes the night flora and fauna. He creeps on the possum family waddling in a neat row. He watches skunk nibble berries because he couldn’t find snails. Yum! Each observation is accompanied by simple and yet stunning artwork depicting usually unseen nighttime activities. The books reaches a denouement when Little Owl asks Mama how night ends. She says, “Spider webs turn to silver threads. Dew drops sparkle on leaves and grass, and tiny stars come down. Moonflowers close and morning glories open. The Sky brightens from black to blue, blue to red, red to gold.” But by the end of her lilting description, Little Owl is fast asleep.

Little Owl’s Day, tells the story of Little Owl’s first experience of day. Woken up by the Chit-chit-chittering of a squirrel, Little Owl cannot go back to sleep! So he turns his sleeplessness into an adventure. “Too bright to be moon, this must be… ‘Sun!’ he whispered.” Throughout the day Little Owl comes to realize that he thought he knew the forest, but he only knew half the story. The day time has a whole new cast of characters whom he comes to learn about; the wolf pups, the deer, and the boar. Not to mention the butterflies, the dragonflies and the bees! But before night falls and his new friends go to sleep, he must do one thing. He promised Bear – who is always asleep at night – that he would show him the moon. Thus the book comes full circle back to Little Owl’s comfort zone – night.

Little Owl’s Night and Little Owl’s Day by Divya Srinivasan are complementary books in a series that show us that beauty is all around us, if we take the time to look for it. They lend themselves quite well to bedtime reading, as they tell a different story of night – not as something to be feared, but something quiet, peaceful and full of its own wonders. They are also beautiful enough to round out any gift basket for expecting parents! Little Owl’s Night and Little Owl’s Day are four-eggs for sure.
