Love Monster, by Rachel BrightSome books manage to be sweet, adorable, silly, and profound, all at once. It’s a lot to ask of 32 pages, but when you find a book like that, you find that you cherish it and want to share it with the world. Love Monster, by Rachel Bright, is just such a book. This sweet story of a monster- neglected in a world of puppies, kittens and bunnies- searching the world for someone to love him is exactly the kind of tale you will want to gift to every kid you know. Love Monster will evoke feelings of sympathy from your child, as they watch the poor monster look high, low, and middleish for love. The ending of this book, “sometimes, when you least expect it, love finds you!” is one of the best lessons I’ve ever seen in a simple picture book. We read this for a Valentine’s story time at one of my libraries, and a coworker gifted me a copy of my own when Monkey was born. The best part is, Monkey loves this story as much as I do. It’s simple, short, and sweet enough that we never tire of it, and I doubt you will, either. While a perfect read for Valentine’s Day, it’s more about love generally (and not at all about the holiday), making it a fun read all year. Bonus: Love Monster has more books now! There’s Love Monster and the Last Chocolate, which is about sharing something, even when you want to keep it for yourself quite badly. Then there’s Love Monster and the Perfect Present, which is about selecting a meaningful present for someone special. Finally, there’s Love Monster and the Scary Something, in which Love Monster confronts his fear of spooky sounds in the dark. I’m looking forward to reading all of these, as we can’t get enough of Bright’s bold lines, bright colors, and adorable monster. However, I have vowed to myself not to read the “How to Deal with ____” books to Monkey until she is actually dealing with that particular problem. I don’t want to put the fear of the dark (or dentist, or haircuts, or fill-in-the-blank) into her head if it hasn’t developed on its own (so far, it hasn’t; she's pretty fearless). So we’ll probably skip The Scary Something for now. Avid fans of this series will also be delighted to know that you can get a Love Monster plushy. He is eleven inches of furry, red, cuteness! Baby Shower Alert! If you need to bring a book instead of a card, one or all of these books is a really great choice! Wanna make the mom-to-be cry? Give her original flavor Love Monster. The first read will make anyone go “awww.” Love Monster gets five eggs from us.
