Brianna and Ariel love to read all year, but there's something special about summer reading. This article kicks off a series about books that are perfect for summer. Using our affiliate links to purchase these books will help keep Busy Nest News going. Thanks for your continued support!

Summertime, and the reading's breezy!

Welcome to Summer Reading! We know that summer can be a very busy season for families, but every bibliophile does their best to squeeze in a little reading time while the weather is warm. Perhaps you’re at the beach, traveling, lounging on a blanket or hammock, or it’s just nap time and so you grabbed the baby monitor and snuck out onto the porch with a big hat and a  cold drink.

So once you find the perfect time and place to read, which book(s) will you bring with you? People think of beach reads as fluff, and sometimes they are. Way back in elementary school, the teachers told us that people write to inform, to educate, to persuade, or to entertain. I love reading literary and challenging works over the summer, but let’s be honest, sometimes summer reading is fluff, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I’ve spent over a decade working in libraries, and Ariel has worked in a library and a bookstore. Plus, all of our friends know we’re bookworms. Suffice to say, we’re pretty qualified to hand out book recommendations. In fact, it’s been our job! That’s why we can’t wait to introduce you to some of our very favorite summer reads! These books will be smart and fun, and a great way to pass the summer. If we’ve enjoyed the audiobook editions, we’ll let you know so that you can load them onto your phone to enjoy while gardening, traveling, or just resting your eyes while you lounge in an Adirondack chair.

Recommendation: The Tetris Effect, by Dan Ackerman

Sometimes nonfiction books are thrillers, too. Dan Ackerman's The Tetris Effect: The Game that Hypnotized the World is a painstakingly researched work that kept me on the edge of my seat. You’ve almost definitely seen Tetris, and likely played some iteration of it at some point in your life. But what do you really know about this game whose rise coincided with the Iron Curtain’s fall? Its journey from being a Soviet computer lab’s low-key office time-waster to international commercial success is as incredible as it is serendipitous. It has history, deeply nerdy computer facts, international business deals, and a dramatic race to find secret Soviet offices. I enjoyed the audiobook, but I would devour this book in print in a heartbeat, too.
