When it comes to purchasing the perfect gift for fathers day it helps to envisions how he wants to feel using it. Does he want to feel prepared? Does he want to feel capable? Does he want to feel tactical? The tactical father is calm, cool and collected because he knows  he has the right tool for the job. The tactical dad is one step ahead at all times. These great gifts will do the trick. Each item was meticulously researched by my husband. Most of these we own and use on a monthly, weekly - if not - daily basis. Read on for his tacti-cool picks!

Just a heads up to our readers, this list contains sharp pointy objects - axes, knifes and one  extremely intimidating pen. Please use caution and common sense when using these tools. When treated with respect they can enhance our quality of life. When used improperly they can do considerable damage.

Husqvarna 26" Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe

The Husqvarna axe is made out of a proprietary carbon steel that can take and hold a razor sharp edge that you cannot get from a stainless steel. It has a hardwood handle that will stand up to any abuse you subject it to. This axe is well regarded in the bushcraft community as a high-quality inexpensive axe. It is frequently compared to the Gransfors Bruk axes, which go for upwards of $200. Since it is made out of carbon steel, this axe does require oiling and maintenance to prevent rusting on the axehead. This axe will last you for generations if you treat it right.

Streamlight ProTac Headlamp

The Streamlight headlamp is a solidly constructed headlamp great for camping or working when you need a hands-free lighting option. Many outdoorsmen suggest a headlamp as your single lighting source if you’re only going to bring one, since it can still be used as a regular flashlight if necessary. They take CR-123 batteries which have a 10-year shelf life, making this great for emergency preparedness, as well.

LA Police Gear's Tactical Bail Out Bag

LA Police Gear’s Tactical Bail Out Bag is a sturdy multi-purpose bag. It works great as a vehicle emergency bag, a range bag, an everyday carry bag, a diaper bag, or a “get home” bag. I personally have purchased at least six times to either use in different applications, or to give vehicle emergency bags as gifts. Need more space? It comes in jumbo size as well!

Kindling Cracker King Firewood Kindling Splitter

When car camping you cannot beat the Kindling Cracker for preparing wood for the bonfire. With the addition of a nice sledgehammer, this makes quick work of any sized log that you can fit inside of the top ring. You can use it to simply split logs,  or go all the way - turning them into thin pieces of kindling to get the fire started. It’s also much safer than swinging an axe around the kids. It is even safe enough for them to use it along with a small hand sledge. Under adult supervision of course!

Gerber EAB Lite Pocket Knife

The Gerber pocket knife is a small, slim razor knife for utility purposes. This knife will fit into the watch pocket of your jeans, and can be kept on you at all times. The razor blade is inexpensive and replaceable, so you can save your regular every day carry knife from most of the work which would dull its blade, without adding unnecessary bulk. Looking to purchase something more substantial? Try the CRKT M16. It's a great budget option which can take a beating.

Lansky Tactical Sharpening Rod

If you have a blade, you need the Lansky tactical sharpening rod. This allows you to hone your bladed tools while out in the field camping or working. You won’t be able to restore a razor sharp edge with this tool, but it will allow you to keep your edges sharp and serviceable for as long as you need to.

Streamlight MicroStream

The MicroStream is a nicely built pen light that you can add to your every day carry kit. Its small compact size allows it to be clipped unobtrusively to the inside of your pocket for easy access when needed, without getting in the way all day long. It’s easier to maneuver than your phone light when you’re trying to use it, and the long lasting battery means you won’t run out of juice when you need it. Or for an even more compact option that clips right to your key chain try this mini Olight.

Rite In The Rain All Weather Tactical Pocket Notebook

Rite in the Rain notebooks are a proven name in the tactical community. In fact, they are used by our service members all over the world. They work great with a pencil, but work best when paired with one of the Rite in the Rain pens. You can write on these pages through water, sweat, grease, or mud and still end up with legible notes. Stick one in your back pocket and never forget a good idea!

CRKT Williams Tactical Pen

The CRKT tactical pen is a sturdy aluminum bodied innocuous looking tactical pen. Many tactical pens are big, and bulky with heavy knurling which nobody who is paying attention is going to think is anything but a shiv. CRKT takes a much lighter approach. The ribbing and curves still allow for a good solid purchase on the pen, while the smooth edges and less aggressive design allows even a sharp observer to dismiss it for a simple writing implement. This pen is a great defensive tool for places where you cannot carry other dedicated options.

Velcro One Wrap

One wrap has a million uses. From rolling up gear straps on a pack, or securing extra cables, to creating whole mounting systems for gear and equipment. This is the perfect DIY tool for the tactical dad. One roll probably won’t be enough once he gets going.

S.O.L. Survive Outdoors Longer Emergency Bivvy

S.O.L. is a proven emergency equipment company. The S.O.L. Bivvy, aka sleeping bag, is a great addition to any emergency kit, or first aid kit. This is a durable weather resistant Bivvy which will keep the user warm whether you’re stuck on the side of the road in a snowstorm, or you’re trying to keep a patient’s core temperature up.

Gerber Dime Multi-Tool

The Dime Multi-Tool is a great little tool if you’re running out of room in your every day carry kit. It’s another key-ring attachable tool that occupies the same space as an already existing item, while ensuring you’re not going to leave it at home. It has all the major showings you’d expect from a multi-tool, just in a smaller design. This is for the guy who doesn’t really need a multi-tool in his day-to-day, but does find himself wishing he had one every once in a while (which is almost every active man who doesn't carry a multi-tool).

Peltor Sport Electronic Hearing Protection

The Peltor Electronic ear pro is a quality earmuff style hearing protection with a little extra. When turned on, the microphones pick up surrounding sound and amplifies it into the wearer’s ears. The amplified sounds are shut off at a safe decibel level for your ears, so you don’t have to think about them before starting up your circular saw, or firing off a round. Additionally, they allow for a standard aux cable input so you can listen to your favorite music while in the shop, or integrate communications with the proper connectors. These are great for attending firearms classes, or for using them in areas where you still want to be able to hear people without constantly taking your ear pro on and off.
